If you have a heart for or want to learn more about how to minister to the poor and needy, the Chalmers Center for Economic Development at Calvin College is now offering a distance course, “Foundations and Principles of Holistic Ministry” from May 7-June 1, 2007. The January class just filled up and closed, so you better move quick. The “Foundations” course is designed for anyone doing ministry and community outreach among the poor. The course lays the foundation for understanding appropriate goals and strategies for Christian economic development in low-income communities. Topics include: An understanding of poverty and its causes, a relational framework for addressing poverty, principles for doing relief work appropriately, needs-based and asset-based approaches to holistic community development, impact of world view on poverty and development, how the local church should respond to poverty, and integration of biblical messages into development programs.
