How Sermon Preparation Can Harm You…

“… lack of private devotional reading and shortness of prayer through incessant sermon making has produced much strangeness between God and my soul.”

~Henry Martyn

To my fellow sermon-makers out there: be not busy with the text of Scripture for the purpose of the flock until you have fed yourself with it first by eating at the table of God’s delicacies through prayer and meditation on the Word.

Importunate Prayer

“The more holy a man is, the more he values prayer. He sees clearly that God gives Himself to the praying ones and that the measure of God’s revelation to the soul is proportionate to the soul’s longing, importunate {persistent} prayer for God.”
