A Pastor’s Relationships—His Family, Part 1

Chuck Swindoll has posted some excellent thoughts on the importance of family for those in ministry at his blog. I’ve copied them below:

A Pastor’s Relationships—His Family, Part 1

As committed as you are to your church, there are others. You are not indispensable there. God can lead you to another church . . . and some day He will. But you cannot get another family . . . and they cannot get another you.

Your family members are the people who love you and need you the most—I mean that in a healthy way. Your wife and children want to be with you. They want as much time as possible to enjoy you. If you’re an empty nester, even your grown children still need you. So do those grandkids. Mine do too. They don’t want to lose us just because we are engaged in ministry.

If your ministry enlarges and begins to include other orbits (as mine has)—perhaps a radio ministry, a broader speaking ministry, a music ministry, or a publishing ministry—keep in mind that all of those things have voracious appetites. Just as Sunday comes every week (even during holidays) and you have to stand and deliver whether you’re ready or not, so your other commitments can suck the life out of you. Every publisher wants the next book, every blog or podcast audience wants the next post. My wife, Cynthia, reminds me often, “Radio never takes a holiday.” Those trains keep on moving, and they are hard to stop.

Now, I’m not saying don’t ever write, or speak elsewhere, or expand your ministry. I’m saying to think first and evaluate if it’s really God who is leading you. Needs will always outrun your energy. Even Jesus didn’t heal everybody. He purposely limited His ministry (Mark 1:35–38). The Judgment Seat of Christ will be about quality not quantity (1 Corinthians 3:13). Think before you add to your plate.

Practice saying, “No.”

Gospelcentric Voting…

Eric Redmond has an excellent post over at Justin Taylor’s blog about his attempt to vote Christocentric and not Afrocentric, in spite of the repercussions. Here’s a blurb:

“If a person would allow himself to be pigeonholed into becoming a person of a nationalistic or ethno-centric thought out of the fear of being viewed as an Oreo or Uncle Tom, then Reformed Theology is not for that person. But neither is the Gospel, for the Gospel calls each of us to stand against an ethnic-centered philosophy of one’s own race, for such a philosophy is naturally conformed to this present world and is in need of redemption. If you cannot stand against your own culture where it does not square with the Scriptures, you are the one who is ashamed of Christ, and such shame has nothing to with philosophical or ontological Blackness; it only has to do with your view of the majesty of the God who calls you to deny yourself in order to follow Christ.”

You have to read this post…

I praise God for you, Eric! May He continue to bless you, your family, and your ministry.

Obama-nation of Desolation

“But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains…” Mark 13:14

The nation is split this morning. For some there is rejoicing. For others, there is only weeping and gnashing of teeth. But does an Obama victory mean the end of the world?

Is Obama the Antichrist? {NOTE: THE ABOVE PHOTO IS NOT AN ACTUAL BOOK. IT’S A SPOOF. YOU CAN READ THE ORIGIN BEHIND THIS PICTURE HERE}. I’m sure there are those who believe Obama is the Antichrist. I doubt it. What he is now is the President-Elect and we are called to pray for him. In fact, Paul makes it clear that if we pray for our elected officials then it will lead to godly living and that it actually pleases God! {see 1st Timothy 2:1-3} Wanna please God? Pray for Obama…

What will an Obama presidency bring? We can only speculate. I’m sure abortions will continue and gay marriage will progress, among other things.

I want to point out some great post-election posts from other bloggers and then share my 2 cents worth:

The Riddleblog: President-Elect Obama

Al Mohler: America Has Chosen A President

These are worth the time to read. But as I awoke this morning I couldn’t help but go to 2 places in Scripture. My choice of candidate was not running and the one I voted for did not win, so there was ample cause for a little sadness this morning. But the Lord brought to mind both of these passages as I was praying and they helped give me a little perspective.

Psalm 4:7

You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.

I’m sure both parties were a hootin’-and-a-hollerin’ for both Obama and McCain at their speeches {I went to bed when Ohio was looking Obama; sick kids, sick dad…just couldn’t hang all night!}. I assume that the supporters of both parties were rejoicing in a good presidential race, despite a victory for one and a loss for the other.

But should a presidential race outcome override our joy in the Lord? The Psalmist reminds us that despite how things are, the joy that we have in Christ far surpasses any earthly joy. There can be rejoicing even alongside sorrow {“…as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing…” 2nd Corinthians 6:10}. Whether your man won or lost, if you’ve been united to God through Jesus Christ, the joy of the Lord should cause your heart to rise in praise and flood your affections.

You may not have noticed, you certainly didn’t see it on any news channel or read it in the papers today. But there was a “Candidate” victory celebration last night too. I’ve uncovered a behind-the-scenes look:

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands,  and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,  saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?”  I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

“Therefore they are before the throne of God,
and serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.
They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
the sun shall not strike them,
nor any scorching heat.
For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of living water,
God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”  Revelation 7:9-17

Barack Obama and John McCain each have their own view about rescuing us from this economic crisis and bringing healing to this nation. But they have nothing on Jesus Christ. One day He will protect His people from terrorists forever, cure world hunger, provide clean drinking water, fix global warming, and comfort the suffering.

There is a Candidate who is already King. Join the victory celebration now and go campaign for Him…
